Why is Water Important for Your Body

Water is a necessity that we cannot survive without. To function properly, the various cells and systems of our body require water as a constant, clean source. There are various reasons why the body needs water, and here are just a few examples: It lubricates all the joints in the body. Cartilage, which is present in the discs and joints of the spine, constitutes about 80 percent of water.

It regulates your body temperature. While most people do not realize it, your body temperature constantly varies depending on your activities. You may be sitting down at your desk or you may be running errands. The constant change in your temperature affects your metabolism and it consequently affects your energy level and your thirst. To stay hydrated and to prevent dehydration, you must make sure that you take in enough water each day.

Drinking enough of water keeps your kidneys from drying out. Dehydration causes frequent urination, which increases the risk of kidney stones, hypertension, and renal failure. It increases your chances of developing  urinary tract infections and even worse, you can develop kidney cancer.

It helps increase your thirst. If you are dehydrated, then you are likely to drink less fluids and be thirstier than normal. This means that you will get thirsty earlier than usual. The consequences of dehydration include a dry mouth, swollen tongue, red or irritated kidney corners, irritated and painful eyes, and an increased chance of developing blurred vision. For older adults, dehydration can also lead to osteoporosis, brittle bones, and weak muscles. And, it can result in feelings of dizziness and confusion.

It controls your blood pressure. When you are dehydrated, your body creates additional adrenaline and cortisol, both of which can raise your blood pressure. These two hormones act on the kidneys to excrete more water and make you urinate more often. Excessive secretion of these hormones can eventually lead to kidney failure, heart attack, stroke, and hypertension.

It helps keep your skin healthy. One of the effects of dehydration is fluid loss. When you properly hydrate yourself, it promotes smooth skin and enhances elasticity. This, in turn, promotes a feeling of good health because your skin looks firm, supple, moist, and youthful-and hydrated.

The mineral magnesium can help decrease the risk of kidney stones by regulating the amount of oxalate or calcium in the urine. If the kidney stones are small, they can easily dissolve in the urine without causing any harm. But, if the kidney stones are large, they can block the urinary opening, causing severe pain, nausea, vomiting, and extreme discomfort.

Water helps regulate your heartbeat. High water intake improves the function of the ventricles, which are the pumping chambers within the heart. This helps the blood to circulate normally through your body and increase the heartbeat rate as much as necessary to counter high blood pressure.

Most people often choose drinks with a large amount of calories in them, such as sodas and juices and ignore the fact that eight glasses of water a day is what experts recommend.

People with Type 2 diabetes are told by their doctors to drink sufficient liquids to help aid in keeping their diabetes under control. Experts recommend that patients with diabetes drink between two and five quarts of water per day, depending on how much they weigh and their daily activity level. The recommended amount of fluid is eight to ten cups. You can find plain water at grocery stores and supermarkets. You can also purchase water-based beverages at convenience stores.

A diet high in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean meats, and low-fat dairy products is good for the heart and the rest of the body. However, a diet low in these foods may cause a decrease in the amount of urine available to substitute for the fluids that are not absorbed due to insufficient hydration. Therefore, it is important for people with diabetes monitor their urine output to see if they are getting adequate hydration.

Although the brain needs water, your body also needs fluids to function properly. Therefore, when your body lacks the fluids it needs, it can have adverse effects on your kidneys, making you more susceptible to dehydration. Symptoms of dehydration include weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, and vomiting. So, next time you feel thirsty reach for a glass of water and reap all its benefits.
